So, we need to understand it more thoroughly to understand when it is an adjective and when a gerund.The answer lies in the fundamental difference between a noun and an adjective.o A noun (gerund) represents an identity. It acts like an equal sign (=).o An adjective (participle) represents a description. It tells you a quality of the subject.To instantly know which one you are looking at, you can use these two foolproof tests.Test 1: The Reversibility Test (The %u201c=%u201d Test)Because a gerund is a noun that renames the subject, it functions like a mathematical equation (A = B). Therefore, you should be able to physically flip the sentence backward (B = A), and it will still make perfect grammatical sense.An adjective, however, is just a description. If you try to flip a subject and an adjective, the sentence will sound awkward or broken.Example A: %u201cHis hobby is reading.%u201d
