The easiest way to identify it as a verb is by looking at the auxiliary verbs that precede it.Let%u2019s look at the most fundamental syntax:Subject + be + Ving (present participle) + Object/ComplementAs this structure shows, when the present participle acts as a verb, it is always paired with a %u201cbe%u201d auxiliary verb. In standard continuous tenses, this auxiliary appears as %u201cis, am, are, was, were, or be%u201d, while in perfect continuous tenses, it appears as %u201cbeen%u201d.1.
